I say learn it. I worked on an as/400 for a lot of years. This June I moved over to our other department to learn .NET/ VB and the like.. The main reason is to convert our as/400 applications. That's a plus for me as I know our core software as I worked on it for 12+ years. That as/400 knowledge is a big plus for the company in there future projects. We are not getting rid of the i-Series as it our core system. We just want more portability to our field reps and customers. Learn both if you have the time.

<EM>Please suggest me whether I want to learn it or not.</EM>

Yes, you do.

There's never been a time when more was going on in the AS/400 family. Almost every major programming technology is being used to interface with (or run on) AS/400s.

Many see only the RPG and 5250 aspects of AS/400s, and those are fading some. If those are your intended directions of focus, they can be very useful. But you shouldn't expect them to be more than secondary. Look more towards database, web technologies and services, and all related areas.

For over 10 years people have predicted the death of the AS/400. If it is about to die, IBM would not continue to invest in the product line.
Yes, there are more openings for other languages. However, the AS/400 talent pool is shrinking as older workers retire. A good developer should be able to find work.

To your question, No. The AS400 market is dieing. You will want to learn C/C++ because its very flexible and widely used. As well as, java, .net, etc. Check the job listing for Software engineer. I wish the AS/400 was still around, but IBM put the AS/400 programmer out of business when they introduce Big Blue. Even tho its unix based, it runs on C++ based programming. Therefore, if you want to learn a language, go with C++, java, .net, etc.
