 Recipient Filet causing duplicate emails
Have a problem with a Newly installed 2003 Exchange Server.  System has had all critical updates installed.  Currently running Avast Anti Virus Server Ed.  10 users running Outlook 2003 or 2007.

Initial Problem: Hundreds of different ques sending out NDRs.

From articles I have read, there is a possiblity of Relaying.  I tested the server by trying to telnet into the Exchange server.  By error message returned the system is not relaying. So... I Found MS Article 886208 and read through it.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886208

The article was the exact symptoms I was having.  Walked through the steps to enable Recipient filtering, cleaned the ques of NDR's on the Exchange server, then tested.  Works great, but now the Outlook users are getting duplicate messages from the Exchange Server.  If I go in and turn off Recipient Filtering, all users go back to single messages.

No Rules or forwarding setup, disabled AV on server still same issue.

Answer Wiki:
Sounds like there is an virus on the network sending large numbers of emails which are bouncing back, or large numbers of emails are coming in for invalid email addresses, and your mail server is attempting to send NDR responses as it should.
