The data file did not close properly the last time that it was used and Outlook is checking it's progress. While this check is occurring, performance may be affected. Anybody, know how to troubleshoot this issue? Thanks!

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I have had this happen with my Outlook 2007 occasionally, but if I let the process complete then Outlook opens normally the next time. Are you connected to an Exchange server or is this a POP3 mailbox? Are you running in cached mode? If you are using cached mode and this happens every time even if you let the check complete then try deleting the .ost file and letting it rebuild a new one. If this is POP3 you may need to repair the .pst file.

Is this an outlook OST file from a cached mode client that is having problems? You can either run the inbox repair tool or ost integrity tool to fix these. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/HA010563001033.aspx Another good idea is to try starting outlook in "Safe mode". There are many switches to start outlook from a command line that can help in troubleshooting: http://www.techgalaxy.net/Docs/Exchange/OL2003_switches.htm good luck.

@hshenton - are you experiencing this issue right now, and the above suggestions did not work? You don't mention what version of Outlook, but if you would like to try running Scanpst.exe to see if it will clear up any issues, one of these will show where you can locate the Scanpst file to run it: Outlook 2010
    32-bit Windows; C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14
    64-bit Windows; C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14
    64-bit Outlook; C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14

    Outlook 2007
    32-bit Windows; C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12
    64-bit Windows; C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12

    Outlook 2003
    32-bit Windows; C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\<locale ID>\scanpst.exe
    64-bit Windows; C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\<locale ID>\scanpst.exe

If the inbox repair tool didn’t work for you, you can give a try to the third party PST repair software available in market.

You can download and try out the free demo PST repair software at:
    http://www.stellarinfo.com/outlook-pst-file-recovery.htm

If it works for you, then you can go ahead to purchase the full software version.
