Re: Windows startup problem

Microsoft Windows
Hi: I have windows media center edition installed and it is not booting up. It goes to the desktop and just hangs without showing the icons. I have run, chkdsk, and tried running in safe mode. It comes up the same way in safe mode. I have also run msconfig and tried running it in a minimal startup mode. No matter what I do, it does not seem to boot up all the way. Any ideas of anything else I could try?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

If you cannot boot Windows into Safe Mode, amd MSconfig’s minimal mode will not help (how did you get MSconfig to start???) chances are one of two things happened: either there is a fundamental corruption of your operating system, or a hardware failure. I have seen both types of problems cause this type of symptom/error. If possible, boot from an external source (BartPE, UBCD4WIN, CheckIt, Troubleshooter, whatever) and see if you can successfully operate the system; depending on the tool used, you may be able to access the error logs and get some clue as to what is happenning. If you can boot, your hardware is probably OK – try a system repair from an original WinXP Media Center CD. If you cannot boot from an external source, you may have issues with your hard drive, your memory or your motherboard (mainboard) – that would be the order which I would attempt to diagnose the issue you are seeing…

Best of luck, and keep us posted
