After listening to the podcast it suggested that if you are running sharepoint and exchange on separate servers you need to install SMTP!?
Well from my point of view you don't.
You just need to set the server name to your exchange server that is smtp enabled, and doing anything with SMTP Server / Service on your SharePoint box is just not needed and can just end up wasting a lot of time and frustration?!
Am I missing something here?
