My dell optiplex gx260(windows xp 32bit x86) lost connection with my 250gb ext hard drive and It no longer showed the drive letter so I couldnt access it ,altho it is showing the device in device manager and says its working.I have manged to get it online in disc manager but it is just calling it disc 1 and saying unallocated. How do i allocate it (without losing the files on it)? thank you in advance for any help you can offer me as I have data on their that is very precious and will be looking for online storage asap once its sorted

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I would recommend plugging your external hard drive to another system to confirm nothing has happen to your data. Once you get the confirmation, you may try to plug that unit into another usb port to let the system “refind” the unit again.

Unfortunately this doesnt work either because I have tried to do that and also tried the ext hd on my other pc and have got the same results on both(that it knows its there but drive letter doesnt appear).I have used easeus 3.3.4 data recovery prog too and it has found the files(so I know there is data still on there) but I dont have the space or discs to recover them as it has found tonnes of history too and came out with 680+gb to recover.I'm at a loss of what to try next or possibly what programme to use for disc recovery poss instead of data recovery?
