Yes, not possible to execute the command properly, without root privilege.

    Thank you Subhendhu.

Could you please provide the steps to reset root's password?

There are some steps to recover/reset the same. But without knowing more details not possible to provide fruitful reply. Are you an administrator? What environment is there? Is it your office/personal. Why did you want to reset? Have you forgotten the password? Is it under a domain or stand alone system?

    Hi Subhendhu,

It is a test system. We did not change the password for root but we are getting "Access Denied" message when we provide the password.

If the password is correct and you sure about that, then system must allows to access root. Please be careful about small/capital letters when supplying password. If that does not help, you can go through this article directly from IBM for more help: https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/ssw_aix_61/com.ibm.aix.osdevice/HT_baseadmn_recoverrootpswd.htm

Thank you. Does restarting the system help in this case?

If you restore the backing up of the installable image, then restart is a good practice. As you mentioned, this is a test system, then for experiment purpose, you can test as your desire (assuming there is no important data/something like that). But always keep ready boot disk/ install disk or media.
