 PTF installation
I am about to install PTF C719850(SF99530). The problem is it is my first ptf installation since we've got the system so we're very late. I want to know if there are special instructions that I should consider. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thx in advance.

Answer Wiki:
Hi, If you follow the PTF package instructions you should be OK. The cumulative packages should contain all the PTF's released to date for a version. I would advise making sure you have recent backups before installing. Regards, Martin Gilbert.

When we say “Cume”, we mean that the set of PTFs in the package are “cumulative”. The C8267530 package is a “cumulative PTF package”.

And that means that it contains PTFs that cover everything in previous cumulative packages.

You only need to install the latest of the cume packages. You can skip earlier ones.

If you system has the space available, I recommend using virtual optical drives for your cume PTF install. It speeds up the installation of the PTFs. One nice bonus is that much of the prep work can be done while you users continue to use the system. Another bonus is that this method checks the integrity of the CDs which avoids nasty surprises in the middle of installation.

IBM has good documentation on using virtual optical drives. It is not as complicated as it appears at first.

Putzgrilla,
Backup the Entire system with go save option 21.
Yes, use the vrtopt. It is a big time saver.
Also, I believe on V5R3, the spooled files are not saved. Does option splfdta show on the savlib or savobj command? You may need to find a way to save the spooled files before upgrades (in case a restore is needed). This can be done a couple of different ways. cpysplf to a database file and save that file or it look into BRMS.

The error, I have never seen. If the CUME’s for 530 don’t fix it, you may need to upgrade the OS and/or get IBM or a Business Partner involved. Let us know the outcome.

PTF’s and upgrades = 70% planning, 10% doing, 30% watching the links blink.
Have a good weekend.

That is correct. With V5R3 SAVLIB, etc. will not keep the spool data. BRMS can. Do the BRMS backup of spool files first, so the QUSRBRM lib captured by the subsequent SAVE 21 knows about it.
