I got some documents printed the other day at a local print shop. I noticed that they moved my PDF from my flash drive to their desktop. Is there a way to protect my files without using a password? Is there a way to make a file open once and after that encrypt it?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I use a ‘printer’ utility called PDF Factory Pro, that allows security options to set passwords for Read only, Print Only, etc. (used in conjunction with Fineprint – great paper saving !)

If you're trying to protect files that end up on someone else's computer, and thus out of your control, then anything is fair game.

From what I recall, there used to be some technologies (which have evolved into the modern day DLP controls) that offered some rudimentary features *if* you retained control of the computer.

The first problem is that you can't choose what utility that the recipient will use to view the .PDF. I might not use a utility at all but instead use my own programming. You have no way to tell my programming (or any unknown utility) to "...open once and after that encrypt". My programming will ignore your instructions. -- Tom
