We have a datasheet view list in Sharepoint with 6 fields. We want to protect 4 of them from changes while enabling the other 2 for checkbox and comments. I saw a post where in the customer creation of the list fields that you could enter something like =[FirstName] and that "protects" the field. I tried it and it and if I highlight the data I can change for formula to something different. Can't directly change the value but the formula can be changed. Could someone help me out on this. I really need a full proof way of protecting the values in this list. Thanks so much!

It sounds stupid, but SharePoint Out Of The Box does not provide such feature.
Since you are asking for a full proof way of protecting the values in this list, I recommend you take a look at SharePoint Column View Permission. Be warned though, it solution can full protect users from views specific view, list column or list item attachments, but you are still venerable from export list to excel or RSS feed. To cover this hole, you need holistic solution beyond the scope of this discussion.
Good Luck!
