I am using Office 2010 and I use this Excel file every day. This morning my office frozen and I need to shut down my entire computer. When I booted back up I tried to open my excel file and it suddenly changed from an .xls file to a .xlsx file and I cannot open this file. My laptop has Office 2007 and I cannot get the file to open on Office 2007 either. I have tried several other options and for the life of me I cannot get this file open. Can anyone help???
Thanks, Matt

I have tried to rename but it just changes the name, I am unable to change the .xls. I have looked throught my folder and cannot find the file renamed. Thanks for the suggestions, any other ideas?
You should be able to change the extension.
If you are not seeing the extenstion when you are doinf the rename, change your folder view to “Details”. Then you should be able to see and change it.
If the extensions are not visible it is probably not for not being in the details view, but because the “hide extensions for known files type” setting is active.
During shut down your computer it’s more your excel file was corrupted. If different actions with .xlsx file can’t help you and MS Excel doesn’t suggest to recover the file. Utility below will help you
excel fix
it works with excel files corrupted by any causes starting with MS Excel 95 up to 2010.
