Problem adding a second domain controller to a single-domain forest

Q:
Problem adding a second domain controller to a single-domain forest
I am trying to add a second domain controller (DC) with 64-bit hardware to a domain with Exchange Server 2003 installed on the first domain controller. I was told that I need to run ADPREP to prepare the forest when I run DCPROMO. This is the first domain in the forest. However, when I ran ADPREP on the first DC, I received a message that the forest and domain were already ready. I am running Windows Server 2003 (x64) Standard Edition and I would like to migrate to Exchange Server 2007. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think you need to run ADPREP unless you are upgrading to a newer version of Windows Server.
I think you should be able to add the second domain controller running DCPROMO without any preparation to the forest or domain. The only special thing to take into consideration when promoting the second DC is that you should select the "Additional Domain Controller for an existing domain " option when running the wizard.

You could find this guide useful.

As for the Exchange migration, I hope somebody else will help.

What OS version is your current server? If it is 2003 and you are going to 2003 R2, then you will need to do the preps from the R2 disk. Let us know the versions and we can provide additiional assistance.
