 Private LAN Server on
Since our college blocks access to p2p file sharing services (torrents, limewire, etc) the people on my floor in the dorms want to set up a server so we can share all of our media with each other. We came up with the idea of getting a server and just loading all of our music/video/etc files on to it. If we can get our hands on a server (for example from newegg), how could we go about setting this up? The server itself doesn't need to connect to the internet necessarily, since we only need it to be accessible to the other people on the floor. In fact it's ideal that the server be completely independent of the internet, since we don't have any kind of administrative access to the school's network. Ideally what I'd like to do is just plug a wireless router into the LAN port on the server and have that wireless network accessible to anyone with the password. I'm pretty sure it's not that simple though, so if anyone can point me in the right direction for how to set this up I'd appreciate it.

Answer Wiki:
yeah you can get a router and server/pc and plug in together and share it... create a ssid and put a password and let your friends know about it. after everyone has already join your group, you might like to hide your ssid name ****************************************************** Also, be aware that if the server/router are doing DHCP you may be hearing from the campus IT people if they sniff out a DHCP server that isn't theirs. Don't you have a comp sci / MIS major around that can help with this?
