How do I Device Description on OS/400 5.2 to print an IPDS Spool File? In one attempt I got a message "CPA3388 - Attributes of file UTBILPRTF not supported for device". Please Help.

Not all printers support IPDS. You need to verify on the HP website that the 8150 is IPDS capable. Often times, you have to buy an IPDS chip that enables the printer to be IPDS capable. Until then, it will be an effort in futilety. You have to remember that IPDS is not an industry standard, it is an IBM thing.

Best results that I have had uses Host Print Transform (HPT) of AFPDS output on a “remote printer” *IP outq. IPDS cannot be converted by HPT, but AFPDS can be. (Change the PRTF object defn. to output AFPDS) With this method no device description is involved, as all the configuration is done in the remoted outq definition and via the workstation customizing object for HPT.

I have worked with both IPDS and APFDS using HPT. They both work equally well. using an HP Laser printer you MUST use AFPDS and HPT to get it to print on the device. Use a printer device description like:

for proper Host Print Transformation and device control. make sure you specify the printer Mfg and Model in the appropriate parameters.

The only function I have not gotten to work is *SHADE in the BOX DDS keyword – this is not supported on non-IPDS devices.

Question for Prbarrett — Are you printing checks with MICR font from your AS/400? We are looking for the best font. Our bank keeps rejecting the MICR font we use, which is one supplied by IBM. WoodEngineer, we print checks using a MICR printer. We use a Source Technologies MICR Laser printer connected to a client running printer emulation. Our font is set to Times 10 and has never had a problem
