Just a note to say the AFP process can be lengthy and cumbersome. There are some cheap software around that will be easier to configure and use.
There has to be something out there FREE and easy. It sounds like the AFP needs to have some “software” installed on a pc. We use thin clients. I would rather not have that if at all possible. I don;t want to put that software on the server either.
There is a way to design an electronic overlay using PC-based software such as Word. This can then be exported to the iSeries and incorporated into your print file.
I don’t know the links but this is even described in IBM’s website with step-by-step instructions.
We have used this technique successfully.
here is a link that shows the step-by-step process
Ten steps to creating form overlays
So just to make sure I get this. You basically create the form ONCE on your PC upload that to the 400 and never have to use the PC to print the docuemnt again.. .Right?
If so that is great news. I can follow 10 easy steps….
You have to install or have iSeries Access on a PC that is linked to the AS/400 via TCP/IP.
You can scan the image and put it on the PC hard dirve.
Then you use iSeries Access to create the overlay and also iSeries Access to send the overlay to the AS/400.
This you use DDS print file to print the overlay.
Thank you for the link, BigKat.
Ron Koontz – you are correct. This is a one-time task. Once the overlay is included in your print file, you are all set.
Awesome…. Thanks for all your help.
