Answer Wiki:
Replace printer cable is one thing. It may be the wrong printer is selected on the iSeries Access session. Bring up the printer session and then go to the File menu and then select Printer Setup and insure the correct printer is selected. If you are using Host Print Transformation you may need to check that the correct printer model is selected in the configuration setting. You should check this web site to select the correct printer model. <a href="http://www-912.ibm.com/s_dir/slkbase.NSF/0888cc5d18fceca58625680b005dc690/b44a2cf4ba778d83862568250053649f?OpenDocument"></a> I refer to this site anytime I setup a new printer. Since it has been working and now stopped I would check the settings on the printer. It could be that the emulation setting was altered. P. Maybe something in the printer setup was not saved or has been changed. Check the whole setup to see if it all makes sense: www.qsecofr.ca/printers/printers_files/Page286.html Voodoo

Most or the time the printer model doesn’t show up on the list, so we discovered a long time ago that *HP4 printer model works well with most printers when selecting Host Print Transform. We also discovered that if nothing prints then simply uncheck Host Print Transform.

Recently we discovered this IBM site which contains a wealth of info about the correct printer model to select when configuring a printer. The URL looks strange so I just checked it again and it worked.

Page title is “Information on Printers from Various Manufacturers”

I was amazed at the number of printers covered by this data.

Woodengineer,

What did you use before you found this IBM link? trial and error? nothing? seriously?

Hello ADMobius,

We configured the printers as *HP4. They were all HPs so this worked but not as well as it could have. We found the IBM site just a few weeks ago so many printers are still configured with *HP4. Perhaps this is why some printers would look connection from time to time for no apparent reason.

Don’t forget this link if you are creating OUTQs

Check the printer queue on the PC with the CA session and make sure the session is using the correect printer. There may be jobs that need to be cleared. If you see any with “error printing” nothing can print until they are deleted. It might be a good idea to just clear the queue on the pc and then send a new spool to it If you get the 400writer started.. If the CA session is not assigned to the correct printeer and active the 400 printer will not start. You will get a message the printing is completed on the 400 long as soon as the job is buffered on the PC print QUEUE. We have had a power failure in an off site building and had to go over and clear the PC queue an re-release the printing from the 400.
Hope this helps

Many times I have had to do the following to get the printer to work again.
ENDWTR WTR(xxxxxx) OPTION(*IMMED)

Turn printer off and actually unplug power and cable, wait a couple minutes

plug back in and turn back on

Then for the ones that we have set up as remote writers

STRRMTWTR OUTQ(QUSRSYS/xxxxxxxxx) FORMTYPE(*ALL *MSG)

for the ones that aren’t remote writers

STRPRTWTR DEV(PRTxxx) FORMTYPE(*ALL *NOMSG)

Sometimes I have had to set the printer back to defaults because someone changed them by mistake.

Just thought I would throw this out there, hope it helps
