Use Revo Un-installer tool and with the help of it totally get rid of your existing hp drivers and software.
After that download fresh copy of new hp driver and softwer for your printer form hp download site.

Thanks for all your replies - I eventually discovered that Adobe Reader 9 is incompatible with IE7 - so downloaded version 8 and voila all working again!
