How can we create and use printer files in RPG ILE. I'm new to AS/400 and I want to know about printer files and reports as my company asked me to.

Hi,

You can’t create printer files in RPG ILE as such. You can use printer files by defining a file with type PRINTER in your file specifications in ILE RPG.

You create printer files using DDS (Data Description Specifications). There is a tool to help you create printer files called RLU (Report Layout Utility).

Maybe this link will help.

Regards,

Martin Gilbert.

In olden days, with RPG people are using O - Spec for defining printer file structure in RPG program.

But, It is suggested to have PRTF created with specific DDS.
And, Define this on RPGLE F - Spec as 'PRINTER'.

Printer files are created using your editor and creating a DDS file. Printer files are used when you want to changes the print by using things like different fonts on the same report and barcodes for example. It may not be as clean as a forms package like OPTIO but it can be done. You could probably build the code for this file and then compile it dynamically, but that would be a lot of unnecessary work.
