 Printek 4503 Configuration for I-Series
This printer is driving me nuts. Has anyone been able to config this to the I-Series. I tried 9100 direct and remote output queues and cannot get it to work.

I tried 9100…

Does the printer manual say that port 9100 should be used?

It’s an old printer we had in storage that they want to use. I downloaded the user manual from the web and I don’t see anything about port 9100. When I try to send anything it just prints out attribute messages and the report to be printed just sits in a pending status. I have it config. as an IBM proprinter. I’m not sure how anyone gets these printers to work on the iseries. I tried Printek’s free tech service and they send it back to IBM. I look on the IBM site and it is worthless.

If using a device description (as opposed to just configuring the outQ description), try configuring the printer as a 3812, model 1. This is a very generic IBM printer. It usually works with most character-based printers.

This is from a working printer devD on our iSeries:

Device description . . . . . . . . : DEVD COACPR2B
Option . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : OPTION *ALL
Category of device . . . . . . . . : *PRT
Device class . . . . . . . . . . . : DEVCLS *LAN
Device type . . . . . . . . . . . : TYPE 3812
Device model . . . . . . . . . . . : MODEL 1
LAN attachment . . . . . . . . . . : LANATTACH *IP
Port number . . . . . . . . . . . : PORT 9100
Physical attachment . . . . . . . : ATTACH *DIRECT
Online at IPL . . . . . . . . . . : ONLINE *YES
Font . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : FONT
  Identifier . . . . . . . . . . . : 11
  Point size . . . . . . . . . . . : *NONE

I could have written this exact question!!!

I have a Printek 4503 WITH twinax AND a parallel port. We had a 720 coming (no twinax). So I tested on my old V5R2 270 driving it with an HP 300x Print Server.

Finally got it working on forms up to 66 lines. But my critical 84 line form would not work AT ALL. Everything printed on 1 line at the top of each form.

I ended up buying a BosaNova just to drive it on the new system. What a waste of money.

I have exact notes somewhere. I’ll re-test on the 720 first and post back.

…it just prints out attribute messages…

Then it might not have the appropriate ‘Manufacturer type and model’ configured on your iSeries. What do you have there now?

Some background can be found on the Information on Printers from Printek page.

Finally got it to work. Set up Printek as IBM ProPrinter 4201-1. Created remote outq as ‘raw1′ with I.P. address. It works but is slow. Takes about 1m 20s to print a full page report. It gives them what they want.
