The four stages of the upgrade.
Stage 1. Preparation.
In the preparation stage, the upgrade plan is created. The most crucial part of this stage is the preparation of a full list of all non-standard extensions and modifications.
Stage 2. Upgrade of the development system (DEV):
During the systems upgrade, the existing R/3 repository (library for ABAP programs, screens, menu, objects, data dictionary) is overwritten and replaced with a repository in the new version. A standard R/3 repository is imported to the system. This signifies the necessity to identify all own and standard modifications of the objects of the repository, which are to be transferred to the target version of the system.
Stage 3. Upgrade of the testing system (QAS):
In this stage, the updating of the version of the system and the importing of all modifications from the DEV system are carried out again. Then, the whole system is tested comprehensively in order to verify the correctness of the performance of the modifications and to check that the modifications have been imported correctly from the DEV system.
Stage 4. Upgrade of the production system (PRD):
In this phase, the productive start is carried out as well as a transition to the support of the productive system performance. All modifications consolidated in the DEV system are imported to the PRD system. The critical economic processes related to the introduced modifications are monitored in the system.
The project of the systems’ upgrade is a perfect opportunity to inspect the whole SAP installation. It enables the removal of any out-of-date objects, improvement, reorganizations and documenting of all used extensions and modifications, and deletion of unnecessary ones.
Because of the functional scope, the SAP R/3 upgrade is a complex enterprise and requires the preparation of a team that covers all areas of the system, the same as in the case of a typical SAP R/3 implementation.
