It is loaded on boot up, but for some reason it was corrupted. (I suspect it was on a damaged sector of my hard drive.)

I solved the problem by booting from a usb stick, and copying explorer back into the system folder.

Did you make any hardware or software changes before this happened? Can you boot it into safe mode? Have you tried a system restore from safe mode? Is it still under warranty? You might want to call support.
