 Possible Hard Drive Crash
When I turn on my Dell Lattitude D630 laptop the only picture that appears on the desktop is my screen saver. No icons or toolbars or even the start button. What can be the problem?

Answer Wiki:
By screen saver do you mean the desktop wallpaper? I would say that explorer.exe is failing to start hence the reason why you can see no icons menu etc.... I would start to debug this by getting into safe mode, you can do this by holding F8 whilst you boot and then choose safe mode from the menu. If you have added any new hardware or software recently then remove it. Let us know how you get on with that first of all.

What troubleshooting have you done so far? Did you make any hardware or software changes before this happened? Can you boot it into safe mode? Have you tried a system restore from safe mode? Is it still under warranty? You might want to call support.

I had a similar thing happen to my pc. It was explorer corrupted (not the win explorer or internet explorer.) I was using XP OS.

It is loaded on boot up, but for some reason it was corrupted. (I suspect it was on a damaged sector of my hard drive.)

I solved the problem by booting from a usb stick, and copying explorer back into the system folder.
