There is a large file, say 1M records. I want to process some 1000 records each time. Is there a way to position to the 1001st or 2001st records and then read sequentially the next 1000 records?

You can use the START verb to position to a relative record number to begin READing records. See the Relative Files topic in the ILE COBOL Language Reference for details. -- Tom
