Research hotmail's mail setup and see if they have changed your account or the pop and/or smtp servers.
If you are accessing your hotmail through outlook, for example, it is possible your account/profile was corrupted. In which case you will have to go back and reconfigure it.
Hope this helps!

If you live outside the United States, by submitting your email address you consent to having your personal data transferred to and processed in the United States.
Unless Microsoft changed something recently, you could not connect to hotmail via POP3 unless you paid for it. The alternative was to download the Outlook Connector which allows you to connect to hotmail for free (using outlook).
I stopped using it because it seemed to hang up too often. Instead, I use the WebMailNotifier addon in firefox. Works great, does not hang up, and is so non-intrusive. Works with other webmail services, too!
I use Outlook for a small business, and recently changed from Cox to Qwest for Internet service. I can receive emails to my business named account, but can’t send. What can I do, or will I have to go back to Cox to get service for a business email domain?

Is this a new development for a previously working account profile? Or is this a problem setting up a new profile?

You can download the connector at http://www.microsoft.com/DownLoads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7aad7e6a-931e-438a-950c-5e9ea66322d4&displaylang=en

Previous answer/link does not look so good. Download the Outlook Connector here.
