Poor network performance with this Win2k Server plugged into the network?
Hi, I have a Win2k Server (Server2) at a remote site, reloaded 6 months ago and AD installed. Previously this server had exchange installed for this location, which now goes to our corporate site through a VPN & T1. Server2 does file serving and athentications. The Outlook users from this site complain it is extremely slow. Server2 is slowing our network response down. I can ping the Exchange server (Server1) and get 250ms-400ms response and then unplug Server2 from the network and ping Server1 again and it drops to 40ms everytime. I've replaced the nic on Server2 and unchecked the Global Catalog, still slow. Before I remove the Active Directory, do you have any other ideas? Thank you

Answer Wiki:
Since simple plugging and unplugging has an effect, this is a job for a sniffer! Put a sniffer (Ethereal) on the server that's suffering, and plug the old server in and try your test. I could guess at possible outcomes, but in this case, the actual answer should be easily found. If you can't detect anything odd on the server end, then put the Ethereal software on your test workstation and try again. Write back and tell us what you find please. Bob

Do you have any protocols installed on Server 2 that are not needed? What about the adapter’s binding order?

Is Server 2 doing any DNS resolution for the remote network? Are DNS requests going to the remote location?

What happens when you PING from Server 2 to the Corp network? What about AD replication? Do you see any errors in Events regarding replication? When does replication take place?

Just some thougts,
