Policy for Wireless Mobile Computers

We have only recently allowed the use of wireless NICs on our corporate laptops. Our sales force hopes to use the technology to send orders, retrieve email, etc. I have been charged with writing a policy governing the types of PCMCIA cards and also how the technology is to be used. I have concerns about users connecting to unsecured networks, and the threats that may involve. Does anyone have a policy/template they have followed? Also, any advice about security, etc., would be greatly appreciated.

Hello brebeck,

I imagine that you’ve already finished this policy, but I have a couple of pointers that I hope are not “too little, too late”.

My first question is simple, do you have a remote access VPN that your users will be logging into? If you have some sort of secure VPN, then wireless access is not far different from Internet access. You should be sure that the laptops have firewalls enabled. Also, it’s good to have one time use passwords in case someone is spoofing an AP.

Also, if you have sensitive information on the Laptops, you might consider a service that either deletes the data when the device is stolen or lost, or encrypts it.

Best regards,
Telecomking
