Adobe is being very stingy about letting me transfer their PDFs to Word documents. They want to charge me $19.00 a month just for the privilege. Is there another way to transfer files?

Why the need for conversion? do you plan on editing these PDF files. What is the final format of the file going to be a .PDF or .DOC?  We used a product called PDF Converter by Scansoft with some success. Nothing will be 100% though. We found if people sent us PDFs of documents that they had scanned and the quality was low, it had problems
