Can the creator of a PDF file tell how many copies the end user prints?

Answer Wiki

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I don’t think so, any more than the manufacturer of potato chips knows how many you eat?

After all, the PDF is just a file. print it, copy it, delete it. How would the creator ever have a handle on that information?

One problem is that the system's spooler sits between the .PDF and the printer, and the physical printer itself can also be involved in copy-counts. There are numerous ways to request a single printed copy but to cause multiple copies to actually print. I can easily imagine that the "number of copies requested" might be tracked; but the "number of copies printer" is almost completely unrelated. Tom
