Answer Wiki:
You may also try to go to the file, right click it and locate the line that says, "Open With" and selected the adobe program.  On some occasions, a program and a file will lose association with each other and by doing this, it helps re-associate them.  It is a common problem that I have seen in the past.

Step

Action

1

Click on the file that will not open

2

Right Click and choose Properties

Click on change

3

Choose Adobe Reader and then click OK

4

You have now established the association for the pdf file type

It’s because you don’t have any application installed that is registered against the .PDF file extension. I suggest PDF-Xchange. Run a oogle search for [ pdf-xchange viewer download ], download and install it. — Tom

Should be “Run a Google search…” — Tom

The Adobe Reader program probably isn’t installed, and I won’t advise installing it. If a .PDF viewer is needed, any of a number of alternatives are available. I’ve been using PDF-Xchange for a couple years. Adobe is a good program, but I’ve had trouble agreeing to some of their licenses in the past. — Tom
