When trying to install: Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats, I get this message: "This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer patch package."  What does this mean?

It could mean that the installer is corrupt. You might want to download the file(s) again.

I have seen this error when the downloaded installer file is corrupted.  The corruption can happen in several ways.  I would go to Microsoft and redownload the file making sure that you got a valid download.    One of your options in the download process should be to save the file rather than install immediately.  It should ask you where you want to save the file.  You may have to down load this file with Administrative rights so it can be saved and reused.
