If a MAC address is unique, then why cannot we use MAC address instead of IP address to define a host in a network.

You should also realise that a mac address is not as fixed, and not as unique as you may think. Although we dont use it these days, DecNet used to do exactly what IP now does, define a network and host id, but used the mac address to do this, by changing it’s value to incorporate these. Routing was therefore done at layer 2, and not at layer 3 as we do now.
If you use a packet sniffer to generate packets, these can go out with any mac address you want, not just the one of the host running the software.
You can also change the mac address of many devices, if you should want to, through the software. Usually you do not want to, but the ability is there.
Other than that, the comments made by the others on here are all valid, and IP is a much more flexible and easier protocol to deal with, which is why it survived, and DecNet did not (even Dec stopped using it and moved to OSI !).

Need career advise ORACLE or SAP?

Hi Sammy,

I am sure you would be surprised to get a fellow-up on a question you asked 5 years ago, ‘Oracle or SAP?’. I found myself in exactly the same position. I am a CPA & a Sr. Auditor at one of the local firms in Washington DC. To increase marketability/mobility; and also get out of public accounting, I wanted to add some software/IT skill. I just want to know how it worked out for you? Oracle Financial vs. SAP Financial, which one has a better job opportunity? I greatly appreciate any help from anybody.

Thank you,

Desktop

What do you “log in” to? …to the machine or to the domain? What Windows version are you running? How were you maintaining recovery data for earlier dates? Is the screen totally blank or do you see the normal background image? Is the task bar visible? If it’s totally blank, is it black or colored? If black, is there a cursor? Has the device ever worked?
.

screen is blank

For a blank screen:
.
1. Describe a “blank” screen. Is it black? Colored?
2. Is there a cursor?
3. Is the device plugged in to a reliable power source? …With a reliable power cord and adapter? (How do you know power is getting through?)
4. If not plugged in, does it have a reliable charged battery? (How do you know?)
5. Is it turned on?
6. Was the screen previously not blank?
7. Is the device ‘sleeping’? …Hibernating?
8. Is the device broken? (Failed screen? Failed graphics adapter? How do you know?)
.
There is much we need to know before trying to determine why a screen is blank if we can’t examine the device. Best for you would be to have some knowledgeable person look at it.
.

.
This has nothing to do with a blank screen. Please open your own question rather than taking over someone else’s question. When you do, include a description of the problem you are having. And describe what your IT support group told you to do and what kind of VPN you need.

E Machines laptop shuts off and on re[eatedly.

This is most commonly an issue due to overheating. Check that the fan is free of dust and that you can hear it running. If you don’t hear it then the fan component will need to be replaced.

3812 printer fonts

It’s still not clear what printer you’re asking about. Is it a HP 8150? If so, what model?
.
Whether or not there is any useful control over fonts and presentation will first depend on the actual printer. If it’s not an IBM printer or the printer is not designed to work in an IBM environment, then capabilities might become less. Printers such as the HP 8150 series are usually intended more for PC networks, but they can often work well with appropriate configuration.
.
Overrides for fonts and font attributes can often be applied to printer jos.

The dielectric

I suppose it could be, depending on your definition of [n] and perhaps the material you’re asking about. In general, the dielectric constant is simply designated as [k]; but it’s not a particularly good symbol due to potential confusion. But why ask here? This site has little to do with that type of question. — Tom

rumba Mainframe file transfer

Assuming the question means “[too] long”, then shortening a name or path is probably the right choice.
.
The question is too vague. What is “mainframe”? (Is it S/390? AS/400?) What is the transfer that is being tried? What is the actual error message?
.

As IBM gathers data from new printers from various manufacturers, they try to fill details on a set of web pages that are linked on the Information on Printers from Various Manufacturers. One of the linked pages is Information on Printers from HP. Search the HP page for [ 2025 ] or [ cp2025 ].
.
It takes a little reading on the printer pages, and some practice; but it can help.

Dynamic operator on WHERE statement

Okay, I’ve read it again, and I see what Phil is saying, and I’m back to what I thought the first time I read it. (I think.) Assuming that File_A always contains a DATE value in the first column, instead of a field name such as DATE_A, a single static SQL statement can work.

Where ( Operator_A = 'EQ' and Date_A = Date_B )
   or ( Operator_A = 'GT' and Date_A > Date_B )
   or ( Operator_A = 'LT' and Date_A < Date_B )
   or ( Operator_A = 'GE' and Date_A >= Date_B )
   or ( Operator_A = 'LE' and Date_A <= Date_B )
The question could still use some clarity perhaps. But dynamic isn’t needed if the description of FileA is understood. The business purpose would be better to describe the need than a technical description.

The first obvious item is “V5R1″. Not much can be done about that, I suppose; but it’s going to be hard getting reliable help with something that old.
.
However, your parameters don’t seem appropriate.
.
MFRTYPMDL(*HP5SI) would seem better changed to MFRTYPMDL(*HPCOLORLJ) since that’s what’s listed for HP CP2025s by IBM. If IBM lists a value, it should be used first instead putting in a guess. Use a guess after trying recommended values. First choice would actually be MFRTYPMDL(*LEXMARKC750), but I don’t know that it’s available for V5R1 unless added late by PTF.
.
Also, if it works, SYSDRVPGM(*IBMSNMPDRV) might be better than SYSDRVPGM(*HPPJLDRV). The CP2025 should support SNMP.
.
It’s hard to guess if those will give better CPI control. I don’t know of a good way to test for V5R1 nowadays.
