Page fault when logging on as a user in Windows XP

The RM laptop starts up normally and the user names appear, but when you try to log in as any user the computer makes a strange noise and a screen displays saying page fault. The screen disappears so quickly it is impossible to read properly. I have tried using a symnatec disc to search for any virus but it comes up as zero viruses found. Any ideas?

Sounds like your hard drive has started to fail. Boot up into safe mode and run a check disk (chkdsk.exe) from a command prompt and see if it can fix any problems on your disk.

I agree with MrDenny, sounds like the hard drive is failing, Cloning a laptop hard drive has some technical challenges. This site is a bit dated, but might be helpful. You might be able to use this program to copy the drive to a USB adapter connected to a new drive, then replace the failing drive with the new one.
Good Luck!

There might be a virus problem with your computer system. Remember that virus programs have the ability to modify, delete, and create files without the authorization of the computer user. However, if you believe that it is not a virus problem, there might be a some corrupted files from your operating system files. Reinstalling or repairing the entire operating system would fix the problem.
