Outside email address added to AD can’t send to individual contacts

I just read Creating a distribution list of outside email addresses and I'm having a similar problem. We also have outside email addresses that need to be added to our global catalog. I created a contact in Active Directory (AD), and I can search for it in the “all contacts” list, which is the default list. However, if I add the email address to a distribution group, the address can only send email to the whole group, not to the individual contact. How can I fix this problem?
