Outlook links not working properly

I am supporting a user who is having issues with opening links from Outlook emails. At some point, the user made Firefox his default browser by mistake, so anytime he clicked on a URL link in an Outlook email, it would automatically open it using Firefox. He wanted to have the links open in Internet Explorer (IE), so I changed the default browser to be IE. The links were still being opened in Firefox though, so after some more playing around, I ended up removing Firefox entirely. At this point, when he clicked on a link, he would be prompted for a program to use to open it (even though IE was set as the default browser). I pointed this to IE, which is fine except now the URL links won't open to the site that the link is pointing to...instead, a IE browser window is opened and goes directly to his set home page, rather than resolving to the link. I'm out of ideas at this point...help!

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Go to the IE internet options settings. Click the program tab. Does it say IE is the default browser there?

Also, make sure that the “Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default web browser” checkbox is selected.

If everything seems to be configured as expected, I would try reinstalling internet explorer.

Yes, all settings are showing IE as the default browser. The checkbox is also selected, but still no dice.

Did you try re-installing the browser ?

Not yet, the user is out of the office until Monday so I'll give it a try then.

Ok, the user was back in today so I reinstalled Office entirely for him. Didn't work. The links still open an IE browser, but still open to his home page and not the link that it's in the email.

Strange, but actually, I was thinking of reinstalling the browser (internet explorer), not office.

IE was also reinstalled, however Firefox continued to take precedence over it. In the end, I ended up re-creating the user's profile. That worked, but was pretty much the only thing that would work. I'm not sure how deep Firefox embeds itself if you make it the default browser, but it appears that it's not an easy thing to 'undo' - just a warning to anyone out there.
