I am wondering if it is possible to configure Outlook on a laptop running Windows XP Media Center to connect to an Exchange server via a VPN connection.

Yes you can configure outlook to connect to exchange using VPN. You have to change the connection settings (tools email accounts, view or change, more settings, connection tab) from "Connect using my Local Area Network (LAN)"to "connect using Internet Explorer's or a 3rd party dialer." Also make sure security (same place security tab) is set to "Password Authentication (NTLM)". This worked for me. It would not connect otherwise.

I am glad it worked for you! I found no answer for this when I was trying it, I just stumbled on the solution through experimentation. I was looking over the answer I gave and Labnuke “improved”, but I could no see no changes Labnuke made to my answer, it is as I originally submitted it. Anyway, I am happy it helped you!. :-)
