I am not running Exchange Server but using pop3. Today outlook has started putting up a message saying "Contacting the server for information". Any ideas how to fix this. I am running XP. Thanks

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

In Outlook > Tools > Options. Click “Mail Format” tab and click “Stationary and Fonts”. Click “Personal Stationery” tab > click “Theme” button and choose another theme.

Here is the same Question and Answer: Outlook 2007 message “Contacting the server for information”

Hope it helps you!

Thanks for your reply. I saw that question and it didn’t really help.

Changing from rtf from html is what fixed it. Something to do with outlook trying to download images in the email

Cheers,

Marek.

Does this message appear when you first open outlook? or does it give the message randomly throughout the day? We'd need a bit more info to be able to give you a solid answer. Based on what you have shared, it sounds like you should edit/check the pop3 server settings in outlook.

Hi, Thanks for your reply Sixball the message appears randomly throughout the day. However I think I have just fixed it, or to be more precise I've got round it. I changed my setting for Compose Messages in HTML to Compose Messages in rtf and now the warning doesn't appear. I inferred from reading some forums that it is something to do with HTML I can only assume that I have up until today been using rtf and perhaps accidentally changed it to HTML. As to why this has fixed it is another question. Thanks, Marek.

I just started getting the “contacting the server” message (which COMPLETELY froze Outlook until manually forced to close) today after using Office/Outlook 2007 and Windows XP for several years. I tried various suggestions without any luck. I realized my C: drive containing the operating system was dangerously full. Since allocating more space to that partition, I haven’t received the error. (Hopefully my experience will spark an idea that will help someone else.)
