I am in charge of a small office network with a server using windows 2003. Recently we have started having problems with outlook 2003 on one pc. First we lost the ability to print emails. We can print attachments opened in word et al but not directly from the email. Now we have lost the ability to forward emails. They just sit in the out box. Any suggestions where to start.

First place I would start is can that same user login to another computer on the same network and do any of these tasks? If the problem follows the user then the user’s profile is probably corrupt and you will need to build a new one.

If the problem does not follow then the Office installation is probably corrupt. If you don’t use office and just use Outlook then the installation of that is probably corrupt. You will need to uninstall office or outlook and reinstall it. But after you install it and BEFORE you do the reinstall make sure you go to C:\program files and delete the office directory where it originally was installed. If you do not do this then the problem might resurface from items left over from the unistall.

I agree with Buddy's suggestions. The first thing to do will be to see if the problem follows the user from workstation to workstation.

I tried your suggestion to no avail. I believe it may have to do with my pc being connected to a server running server 2003. I have a lap top attached to the same system using outlook. I do not experience this problem. I will try to delete my computer setting for this machine and will let you know if the problem is gone when I create a new pc setup.

The problem does not appear to be with server 2003. I have tested outlook on other machines after logging in and I am able to print. I am still getting the error"could not complete the operation. One or more parameter values are not valid. Any idea where to look on my machine for a file that could be causing the problem?

I have the same problem in that sometimes outgoing emails just sit in the outbox and I have talked to others who have the same problem. I thought it was related to one incoming email address but that is not the case. Interestingly, if I copy the contents of a 'stuck' email and create a new email with same content and address and title pasted in, the email is sent. -Although the original remains stuck in the outbox. Send/Receive appears to ignore the outbox at further attempts to send the email. I have set up logging, but this has not shown anything yet. One final point in that, for me, I believe that this always happens when replying to an email. Using XP Pro with SP2; Outlook 2003 (11.8206.8202) SP3; Emails are sent via an ISP, so I have no idea what they run.

An additional observation, as these failures are sporadic. I had a failure, replying to an email, yesterday, so dragged the email out of the outbox to the draft folder. I then resent it and the email went straight away.

I am using office 2007 with Exchange 2007 and I get emails stuck in my outbox from time to time as well. Typically it is first thing in the morning and if I close my outlook I get prompted there are emails to be sent, do I really want to close without sending? I say yes, re-open my outlook, let it load and then have to hit "send/receive" to get the emails to send. After that they do not get stuck again until the next day when I first open my Outlook. I have yet to find any information on this repetitive issue for me.

Wrt to the problem I posted above about Outlook sporadically not sending emails, I have discovered the cause/ solution. Under Email Accounts/ Change or Edit Email /Internet Email Settings (Pop3) there is a button marked 'More Settings...' Click this and go to the Outgoing Server tab. There is a check box at the bottom of the window labelled 'Log onto incoming mail server before sending mail.' Having the checkbox selected appears to clear the problem.
