We use SMTP-based Outlook 2003. Recently we have had difficulty sending emails to multiple users (60 - 70 users, 350 Kb msgs). The program times-out on us. As a not-for-profit organization trying to send information to our membership, this is crucial. Any thoughts as to the reason and possible solutions are welcome. Thanx

There can be many reasons for SMTP time outs. If this is your email server you can check the SMTPSVC logs and see if the FROM: command is getting an acknowledgment. Is the TO: command being generated?

If this is not your server and you are using a free service like Gmail or Yahoo then chances are the problem is not on your side.

I have also seem SMTP time outs when a specific address is black listed and it hangs the machine so it will not try to send another message to it immediately.

Did these problems just develop or are they going on since inception? Are all the people you can not get to on the same domain? Anything in common? Does the list fluctuate?

Posted this update for Ccta ITSupport Our ISP provides our SMTP email server, it is not free. The timeout problem has existed for at least 8 months but I have no information prior to that. However, they appear to be increasing in frequency. The recipients are on different domains, and are seldom the same addresses when the problem occurs.

Maybe your ISP is limiting SMTP sessions and they are all in use when you are trying to send these messages. There could also be an issue if you are trying to send a lot of e-mails out in a blast that it could be seen as spammer activity and that is being blocked by some ISP's. I'm not saying that your organization is a spammer but you may want to investigate how to effectively send bulk internet e-mail without being labelled as a spammer and placed on some blackhole list somewhere.
