Outlook 2003 uses a .PST files to store e-mail for the user. The path is typically deep inside Documents and settings. To find the exact location, go to the Folder list view in the Navigation pane on the left. Right mouse click on top level of the Personal Folder in the folder list. Choose Properties. Click Advanced. See the full path by placing your cursor in the field and using your arrow keys to move to the left or right.

To navigate to the typical folder with the scanpst program, you will need to check the box "show hidden files and folders" in Folder options of My Computer.

I would recommend getting all the updates available for Outlook 2003.

Many thanks for getting back to me.

I tried SCANOST but it cannot run as my outlook does not support synchronisation???
scanpst asks for a file to scan, what do I point it at?

I am using windows XP on a laptop in home setting. I am not linked to any network.
Outlook does link to a pop3 account with my ISP tiscali.

It is not possible to give the error message as there isnt one. On closing Outlook I get a window telling me outlook has encountered a problem and will report it to Microsoft.

It is only when I restart the laptop next time that I get a scandisk operation on startup, but it never finds a problem.

(I had a problem with my wifes laptop not sending emails with outlook express, so I loaded outlook 2003 from my original disc. I am wondering if Microsoft has detected this and is shutting me down for violation.)
