Outlook 2000 freezes

Microsoft Exchange
I have a spoke based WAN and in the host, I have an Exchange 2000 Std Server. All users use Office2000, so they have Outlook 2000. All are up to date in SPs. In the last 6 months, several users in the branch offices have started complaining that Outlook would freeze up when they are receiving an email with large attachments. Regular emails (no attachments or very small < 500MB), they do not see this. Here is what happens. They are writing an email. Outlook freezes. (They can go to another application and work). After some time, 3 mins to 10mins, a new message with an attachment will appear in their inbox. After this appears, they can access Outlook and finish writing the email. One user that experienced the long time freeze, would use TASK MANAGER and kill Outlook. Then reopen it. The new message would be there completed. I store ALL emails on the host Exchange server. I am not pushing email out to the desktop. What would be causing this? Could it be an Office Update Patch? Is Exchange actually pushing the data to the desktop? The users are complaining a lot and I cannot find any reason to this issue.... Thanks

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

My first thought is anti-virus and a desktop configuration (maybe preview pane?) that is triggering a local scan of the attachments.

A problem with a pattern file release could cause something like you describe. If that’s possible in your environment, you might look to your AV vendor.

Curious – was “<500MB” a typo – that’s a pretty big attachment in my book!?

Try installing Outlookff.msp (as long as Office SP3 is installed first). This addresses Outlook hang on exit but I have seen it cure the above mentioned woes also. I would recommend trying it on a few "test" systems first.
