Question: We have an older test AS400 running V5R1 (I know it's a dinosaur). I'd like to understand what options there are for vendors providing an upgrade path? Is IBM the only company that can provide an OS400 upgrade or are there 3rd party providers who can supply OS and appropriate compilers.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Martin,

Thank you for the response. I’ll look into the reseller avenue. The machine went off maintenance long ago. Hence my desire to get an alternative look at the cost of keeping it up to speed in OS and OS options.

Hi,

IBM is the only source for OS400 (i5/OS), but you may be able to buy/obtain it from an IBM reseller/agent. You may be able to get some sort of discount on the initial cost of the software itself, but I suspect you will always end up paying the same price for maintenance and licenses. These are normally dependent on the number of users and/or processing capacity of your machine.

Regards,

Martin Gilbert.

You also need to find out if your hardware can be upgraded. We have an 820 which is our development system - just upgraded it to V5R4 and now a few weeks later IBM announced the end of life for V5R4 (sched for 2010, I believe) And... the 820 cannot be upgraded to V6R1. The big gotcha is that when you upgrade the O/S in V5 - you need license keys. IBM generates those keys. I don't know if they will generate keys for unsupported releases - V5R3 end of life is the end of April, 2009. Let us know what kind of luck you have. Regards Mike
