The upgrade path of V5.1 to V5.4 is not supported by IBM what would be the best upgrade method to use?

I think that you can go from V5.1 to V5.2 then to V5.4 but I don't think they ship out V5.2 anymore. Unless you already have V5.2 in-house, you will have to obtain V5.3, upgrade to that, ensure everything works, and then upgrade to V5.4
