orphaned .OST

Tech support, Help Desk, Windows, .OST files

Hi,

i have i had to restart a users machine today and when i logged back in and opened outlook there was no sign of the .PST, but the .OST is there. i search for it and its as though it never existed.

i read that you can convert .OST to .PST to recover your messages. i found some software but its a trial and only restores 2.5mb andthe full versipon is #700 (this .pst is 655mb).Can anybody help me out on how to solve this issue.

Thank-you
andy

please make sure that the user kept outlook data on the computer --- may be on the exchange server
If you are keeping Outlook data on your computer, you are using a Personal Folders file (.pst) or an Offline Folder file (.ost).

Thanks,

Everything is stored on the client machine. the OST is on the workstation but the.PST isnt.

I read that the orphaned .OST can be converted to a .PST so that all the data can be extracted

You only need to recover email from the OST if email has been deleted from the server since the OST was orphaned.
If the email still exists on the server simply create a new OST.

If you do need to recover the lost email try a program called OST2PST.EXE available from:
<a href="http://www.xcopy32.com/download.php?file=24" rel="nofollow">http://www.xcopy32.com/download.php?file=24</a>

Converts a Microsoft Exchange .OST to .PST. Outlook 97/98/2000/2002. This will not work with Outlook 2003 because of the new Exchange cached mode.

Make sure you follow the instructions on ost2pst.exe exactly, a lot of people have encountered errors because they aren’t typing the syntax in exactly as described in the readme.

If you’re using Outlook 2003 you may need to resort to buying a utility such as the one from:

I hope that this helps.
