orcing a limit for the internet temp folder in windows 2000
Hello all, Setup is as follows: Server is NT4, clients are windows 2000 I CANNOT spend any money. All my users log on do all work as normall and then go on the internet. Now all users default size for the internet's temp folders is 596MB!! and the Pc's will be used by 700+ Kids!! As you can guess, there is my problem. I want to know if i can somehow apply a limit/setting for all users (Say 5MB for arguments sake) or find a way for all users to clear the folder after IE closes. Any help'd be great Thanks, Carl.

Answer Wiki:
IF you can find the registry entry for the internet temp folder size you can write a script to set the value when people login. I believe you will find the setting under the HKCU key and maybe a default setting under HKLM and/or HKEY_USERS/default. Then you can write a small script and schedule it to start at login using the group policy MMC snapin. Make sure you point the snapin at the local machine. Or, if they are on a domain, put it in their login script. Let me know if you need more detailed information.

What you want to do is easy:

- Right-mouse-click on Internet Explorer and click on Properties (or start Internet Explorer and click on Tools -> Internet Options…).
- To change the size of the Temporary Internet Files folder, click on the Settings button in the Temporary Internet files box.
- – Click on the Settings… button.
- – Move the slide bar to the left on the Amount of disk space to use.
- – - You can also change the location of this folder with the Move Folder … button.
- – When done here, click on the OK button.

- Now, click on the Advanced tab (at the top of the Internet Options pop-up window).
- – Scroll down to the bottom to the Security section.
- – - Click on the (5th) box for “Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed” option.
- – - Click on the OK button.

You’re all set!

You can exclude folders from roaming profiles in NT 4 and you can also limit the size of the profile in NT 4. Check out the following technet articles from Microsoft.

Is this in a Domain environment? And are you talking about users on one computer or on multiple computers?
