The client tools work well on Windows 7.

Trying to install the database server on a Windows 7 machine is not recommended because that is an unsupported combination, and even if you are able to install it, it might not work as expected.

If want to do this for a company, then you should install it on a server OS (Windows 2003 would work well with Oracle 8i), but if you want to do it for educational purposes, you should use a newer version of the database software.

AFAIK, Oracle says that Oracle 11g Release 2 is the first supported version for Windows 7. You might run WinXP in a VM and install Oracle 8i that way and it might even be possible in XP compatibility mode somehow; but it's hard to think of a reason to do it. Oracle 8i was desupported years ago. No company's database should be put at risk by running on it. -- Tom
