Can you create ASM instance without creating a database? If yes, how?

Yes you can. I am not sure why you would want to do this. An ASM instance can not serve as an actual DB instance. It only serves up diskgroups to the real db’s. The way to setup an ASM db is using the following initASM.ora.

INSTANCE_TYPE=ASM
ASM_DISKGROUPS =’dgroup1′
ASM_DISKSTRING =’/dev/raw/*’
shared_pool_size=64000000
