I'm new to Oracle so forgive me if I don't have all the terminology down, but I've installed Oracle 10g and I'm constantly getting an "ora-12154 Could not resolve the connect identifier" error at step 12 in database configuration assistant. I beleive it has something to do with the tnsnames.ora file and I've played around with the variables but I can't get it to work. the tnsnames file that is created, I guess by default, looks as below. # tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File: D:oracleora101networkadmintnsnames.ora # Generated by Oracle configuration tools. EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC)) ) (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = PLSExtProc) (PRESENTATION = RO) ) ) Thanks

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Wilson, I am new to oracle too so keep that in mind but your tsnames files doesn’t look like ours. See below. Can you tell me what operating system you are using and what step 12 is?

Thanks, Kathie

EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC0))
)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SID = PLSExtProc)
(PRESENTATION = RO)
)
)

# BONSAI
# ====================
EAULIVE2 =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 10.20.0.69)(PORT = 1521))
)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SID = eaulive2)
)
)

    Hello wilson, it would be useful if you say what step 12 is, or what it does. We mean, something like "Step 12: Creating your tnsnames.ora file...". Using the configuration assistant is not necessary if you can create the tnsnames.ora file by yourself. The example provided by emersokl looks better than your tnsnames.ora file, so you should try to write yours looking at it. Here's another example: EXAMPLE = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)(PORT = 1521)) ) (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = TEST) ) ) Write something like that in your tnsnames.ora file replacing EXAMPLE with the net service name you want to use, XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX with the address or name of the database server and TEST with your database instance name. In this example, if I want to connect to the database in sqlplus, I need to type user,password and in the "host string" field : "EXAMPLE". (or typing "connect user_name@example"). I hope this helps.
