My Database is in limbo at the moment and i'm trying to get it shut down properly and restarted. I'm getting the ORA-01033 and from I understand from reading posts..i'm to log in as sys/password as sysdba. When I do this, sqlplus is returning the error message: ORA -01031 Insufficient privileges. I've tried several different usernames...but SYS should work as i've used this many many times in the past "as sysdba". Does anyone know what to do in this case?

What Oracle version you are using and on what platform/OS?

Hi, If your using 9i and up, you can use the command 'sqlplus "/ as sysdba"' to logon as sysdba if password file is not set. If not, you have to provide the password in the command. Regards, Joris

If you are logging in from a remote computer, then it sounds like your password file doesn't contain the user name that you are using to log in. The easiest way to resolve this is log into the server using the username that installed the Oracle software (the Oracle owner) and then log into the database locally ie sqlplus /nolog connect / as sysdba This should allow you to connect to the database. If you're on Windows, make sure that your login is part of the ORA_DBA group. Make sure that your orapwd file is current; that's caused us no end of grief at times. If you're using Terminal Services on Win2k, you need to use SQLPLUS "/@SID AS SYSDBA", and the listener has to be up. HTH, Mike
