On Monday, Rackspace launched their open source cloud computing project, OpenStack. They've partnered with NASA, releasing the code for Rackspace's public cloud spaces Cloud Files and Cloud Servers. Later this year, NASA will release code for its Nebula cloud platform. Do you think their goals of creating cloud computing standards separate from proprietary cloud computing to prevent vendor lock-in and boosting cloud adoption are lofty? Right around the corner? I applaud their ingenuity and leadership into the wild blue yonder of cloud computing. Competition for the proprietary cloud systems is to be encouraged and in my opinion it is always healthy to increase the competition and thereby increase availability and choice for the end user. That’s who wins, the end user. Hurray!

Wondering if people feel the same about OpenStack now as a year or two ago. Is it having the impact you thought it might? Many IT pros and vendors see momentum; and now that VMware is on board we may see even more. But maybe the open-source standard hasn't changed the industry as much as anticipated.
