Opening a file from a program vs. from a folder
We have a shared folder on our server where we store spreadsheets, documents, etc. It uses Server 2003 Small Business. If I search for a file using explorer and try to open it, there is usually a decent amount of lag before it opens. If I open the program and search to open the file from there, it opens immediately.
Software/Hardware used:
Microsoft XP, Excel 2007, Word 2007, Server 2003
What would be the best explanation for this lag?

When you click on the file without the program open then the computer has to initialize the program first before opening that file. If you already have the program open you have cut out that step. That is why there is not the lag when you open it from within the program.

That indeed would make sense. Sadly, I think I did not explain the issue correctly in full the first time. Even if the program is open this occurs.
Do not get me wrong, it is not hard to get a user to explore to an item through the program instead of searching through a folder, I am just curious about the time difference.
Perhaps it’s something related to how Windows handles file associations? Maybe it’s searching for the proper app to load (even though it should already know)…? Or, perhaps it’s anti-virus software performing a scan on the files as they’re opened? You’d think a file open is a file open but it could be that the scanner is interpreting things differently when the files are opened from a folder. May want to try and disable any anti-virus on the systems and test it.
